A Message from Leadership

Welcome, and thank you for visiting our site. We hope you find this information helpful as you begin to explore Bayer Biological Products: our foundation, our purpose, and our products.

We believe Bayer Biologicals' history exemplifies dramatic achievement under pressure. During the intensity of war, our research led to discoveries about the value of human proteins in medicine, generating an entirely new way of treating patients who had previously untreatable conditions.

Our research focuses on identifying proteins that occur naturally in the human body and developing these proteins as disease-fighting agents. Our products, whether derived from human plasma, recombinant DNA technology, or gene therapy - as they are certain to be in the future - are a result of scientific and technological innovation designed to meet urgent, often life-threatening, and otherwise unmet medical needs.

Throughout our 60-plus years, we have developed a deep and abiding relationship with the communities of patients who depend on our therapies, and respect them for their courage in fighting serious, often rare protein disorders.

For people with haemophilia, we produce we produce recombinant Factor VIII, a protein that is crucial in enabling blood to clot effectively and quickly. Approved by the FDA in 1993, our first generation recombinant factor VIII concentrate has been a great commercial success. In fact, it is one of the leading biotechnology products in the world. In 2000, we launched a second-generation product, from which human albumin has been completely removed from the manufacturing process. Looking to the future, we are investigating gene therapy for haemophilia, exploring ways to implant the gene that produces Factor VIII directly into patients, possibly enabling them to avoid drug infusions altogether.

In all of these areas, we are pushing the frontiers of what we can do to make the safest, purest, most effective protein therapies possible. Much of the technology, and much of the human effort, focuses on the safety of protein therapies. In addition to scientists engaged in research and discovery of new proteins, we conduct extensive research into viral removal and inactivation techniques, and incorporate advances as rapidly as technology can be developed.

Over the decades, these therapies have saved millions of lives. The science has evolved rapidly and Bayer Biological Products has been at the forefront of this progress, evolving along with it. From our earliest effort to harness the benefits of albumin protein, to our work today in providing therapeutic proteins using recombinant technology, to tomorrow's gene therapy breakthroughs, Bayer's commitment in the protein therapeutics arena - past, present, and future - is clear. The power is great, but so is our responsibility, as we say at Bayer, "to change the world with great care."
